Provoking business issues, statements & questions.

Running a successful small business is not rocket science.

A fact that many professional people such as accountants and financial advisors do not like to admit

Have you seen the TV aid

'What's in your wallet?'

But perhaps what's more important is

'Who's the best person to look after your wallet, you or someone else?'

Many small business owners feel ill-equipped, uncomfortable and somewhat belittled when in the presence of professional people who regularly advise them on running their business.

It's often like being in the Dragons Den!

And why do many of these professional people use big words and long sentences that many business owners do not understand?

Perhaps some of these professionals should enrol on a 'plain English course', or better still do a 'job swap' for a week and understand how difficult it can be for a business owner to make ends meet.

If only these business owners had the confidence and understanding to challenge these professionals when required. If only these business owners could extract the important information from the dross that many of these professionals present. Then, perhaps the owners business would benefit ten fold and the payment fees to these professionals would reflect value for money.

Change is often difficult for many of us, be it at home or in our business life, be it to solve a problem or keep up with the times.

'Change, why change when we've always done it this way!'

I'm sure many of us can relate to the above statement, but as you endeavour to steer your business in times of good and bad, changing the way that you operate your business, both internally and externally is inevitable in order for your business to have a long and prosperous life.

As one business owner stated

'Our problem, in essence is a simple one. We never have enough time to change how a job is done, but we always find time to do the job twice.'

To end, a few proverbs that are worth reflecting on both on a personal and business prospective

  • How can you discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore!
  • The fruit of a tree is always out on a limb.
  • Behold the turtle - it never makes progress until it sticks its neck out.
  • He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who never asks is a fool forever.
  • It is a good rule to face difficulties at the time they arise and not allow them to increase unacknowledged.
  • I can't change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.
  • I see I forget, I hear I remember, I do I understand.
  • No person is rich enough to buy back their past.
  • The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is today.
  • When one door closes another opens, but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.
